One of these two numbers can only ever go up. We publish the other one.

Every corporate plantation programme leads with trees planted, and there are three good reasons for that. It is the larger figure. It is available on the day itself. And it can never fall, no matter what happens afterwards.

Trees surviving is a much harder number to live with. It means nothing at all for the first twelve months. It requires somebody to physically go back to a recorded location with a list and count. And it will always, without exception, be lower than the first number.

We have committed to publishing the second one — broken down by species and by site, with the date it was last verified shown alongside it. That verification date is the part we would ask you to look at hardest, because it is the only element of the whole figure that proves somebody actually went back rather than estimating from a desk.

Our first twelve-month check on the Mangalia and Anaj Mandi plantings falls next August. Whatever that check says is what goes on the page, and we have said so in public now so that it is harder for us to quietly change our minds later.
