One lasts years. One lasts a century.

A filter bag and a tree are doing the same job. One of them outlives everybody who installed it.

We get asked fairly regularly why a filtration company is planting trees, and the question is usually asked in a tone that suggests the person asking suspects a marketing department is involved. It is a completely fair question and the answer is not complicated.

A filter bag removes particulate from a gas stream. It is engineered, it is precise, it works inside a clearly defined system with known inputs, and it lasts a few years before it needs replacing. We have been making them since 1989 and we are good at it.

A tree removes particulate from the open air. It also produces oxygen, holds soil together so that it does not wash away, cools the ground around it, and supports more or less everything living in the area. It is alive, it works inside no defined system whatsoever, and it can go on doing all of that for a century.

It is the same job at a very different scale. One of those two things we know how to do extremely well. The other one we are still learning to do properly, and that is precisely why the programme is built around survival rates and aftercare rather than around planting events and photographs.

We are not claiming the two are equivalent, and we would rather nobody read it that way. What we are saying is that they point in the same direction, and that a company whose entire business is taking particulate out of air had no particularly good reason to stop doing it at the factory gate.
