Once a year, it opens

For eleven months of the year you are guessing. For one week you can actually go and look.

Most Indian plants open their baghouse once a year, and for a good number of you that window is this week.

It is the only time in the calendar when the evidence is physically accessible. Twelve months of unanswered questions can be settled in an afternoon by somebody with a torch and a phone camera. In practice this almost never happens, and the reason is not carelessness. It is that the shutdown schedule is built around getting the plant back up and running, and nobody has been given the job of finding out what went wrong.

So here are six things worth doing while it is open.

Photograph the wear pattern on three bags, taken from three different compartments. The differences between compartments will tell you considerably more than any single bag does on its own.

Check the cage welds and the coating at the contact points. If a bag failed where it touches the cage, that was never a media problem and no change of specification will fix it.

Measure the bottom cuff. Wear concentrated there points you at can velocity, or at dust being drawn back up out of the hopper.

Inspect the tubesheet and the seals. A surprising proportion of what gets recorded as bag failure turns out to be seal failure, and the two look very similar from the walkway.

Record the pulse pressure that is actually reaching the far compartments, not the pressure at the header. They are frequently not the same number, and the gap explains a great deal.

And keep one failed bag. In a sack, labelled with the compartment and the date, in a corner of the store. It costs nothing to do and it is the only piece of evidence in this whole process that cannot be recreated once the plant is back up.
