We would rather know than assume

We built a laboratory in 2009 for the same reason we make our own felt rather than buying it in. We would rather know than assume.

Most filter bag manufacturers are, in the end, assemblers. They buy media from somebody else, cut it, stitch it and ship it, and the properties of the material they are selling you are properties somebody else measured and wrote on a certificate. That arrangement works perfectly well right up until the day it does not, and on that day nobody in the chain can tell you what actually went wrong.

We went the other way. We make the non-woven felt ourselves at Indore and again at Rosslyn, and in 2009 we built a laboratory next to the felt plant so that we could check our own work rather than take delivery of somebody else's opinion about it.

What the laboratory does, in plain terms: air permeability, filtration efficiency, weight and dimensional verification, tensile and bursting strength, FTIR spectroscopy, and microscopic fibre analysis. Some of those tests tell us whether a batch is what we intended it to be. The others tell us what happened to a bag that failed in somebody's plant, which is a different and considerably more interesting question.

The part of this that customers tend to find most useful is not the certificate. It is that when something goes wrong in your baghouse, there is somebody at our end who can put the failed material under a microscope and give you a real answer within a day, rather than a polite letter three weeks later.

That is the whole reason the laboratory exists. It is also why, before we quote you a replacement, we would genuinely rather look at the one that failed.
