From the line to the soil

Most companies decide how many trees to plant in a meeting. We decided to let the production line do it instead.

This twenty-second film shows the whole chain, because the chain is the part that people find hardest to believe when we describe it in words.

It starts with a roll of technical felt coming off the needle-punch line at our Indore works. That felt is cut, stitched and finished into filter bags. Those bags are shipped out and installed in a baghouse somewhere — a cement plant, a steel works, an asphalt plant — and for the next several years they sit there holding back particulate that would otherwise have gone out through a stack and into the air that people nearby are breathing.

At a thousand metres of fabric produced, one tree goes into the ground under Green Legacy. A thousand cages, another tree. Five hundred bags, another. A hundred fibreglass bags, another.

So the tree is not something anyone sits down and authorises. It is an output of the same process that produces the filter bag, and it happens on the same schedule that the factory runs on. When we are busy, more trees go in. When we are quiet, fewer do. Nobody has to remember to keep the programme going, because the programme is attached to the machines.

That is the whole idea, and we have deliberately not made it more complicated than that.
