If your plant shuts down every night, your filter bags are probably wearing out faster than those in a plant that never stops running.
Most people expect the opposite, and reasonably so. It seems obvious that a machine working around the clock should wear out its parts sooner than one that gets a rest. With filter media it works the other way round, and it is worth explaining why, because it changes how the media should be specified in the first place.
A plant that runs continuously gives its filter media a stable environment. The bags come up to operating temperature, they stay there, and what eventually ages them is chemistry and abrasion. Both of those are steady, both are predictable, and both can be designed around at the specification stage.
A plant that starts and stops does something considerably harder to the same material. Every single start-up drags the media up through its dew point at the moment when the burner is at its dirtiest. Every shutdown brings it back down through that same band a few hours later. Moisture condenses onto a surface that is already carrying a layer of hydrocarbon-rich fines, and the dust cake that forms on top of that stops releasing cleanly when the cleaning system pulses.
Once the cake is not releasing properly, pressure drop starts climbing from a baseline that never fully returns to where it was. The cleaning system responds by pulsing harder and more often, which is itself a form of wear. So the media is being attacked from two directions at once, and neither of them appears in a continuous plant at all.
What follows from this is a practical point. The right specification for a seasonal or batch plant is not the continuous specification with a shorter expected life written next to it. It is a different decision altogether, where the surface treatment, the fabric weight and the cleaning regime are all chosen for the transition rather than for the steady state.
And if your plant runs in campaigns and somebody is benchmarking its bag life against a plant that never stops, the benchmark was wrong before the bag ever was.
